Session Initiation Protocol
Session Initiation Protocol, also known as SIP, is a protocol which was offered as a standard system for creating, adjusting,or ending a session which involves various forms of multimedia. This multimedia could include online games, virtual reality, or videos. By the end of the year 2000 SIP was recognized as a protocol and an important part of the IMS system. It plays an important part of Voice over Internet Protocol.SIP is used for connecting SIP servers via UDP or TCP. The primary goal of SIP is to set up or take down video or voice calls. These calls are normally conducted over RTP. It is important for SIP to mirror the many features available in standard telephone networks, and this includes dialing numbers, allowing a phone to ring, and allowing the user to hear a busy signal. Even though the terms and technology used in setting up SIP are different from standard phone networks, the primary function is still the same.
Despite the fact that there are many other protocols other than SIP, it has become the standard among IP users who utilize VOIP. There are a number of strong similarities between SIP and HTTP. SIP is designed to be read by humans and has many status codes. One example of this is the 404 error code. A number of devices have been developed which use SIP to communicate. Many of these devices use what is called Electronic Numbering. The goal of Electronic Numbering is to transform standard phone numbers into SIP.
This allows them to communicate with other people who use SIP. Apple Computer and Windows now support SIP, as well as AOL Instant Messenger. All of this software is capable of processing video and sound via SIP. Proxy servers are also used to handle requests about the location of the user, and can provide other features and services which will increase the efficiency of the system. Users are also capable of loading up their locations which can then be used by proxy servers.
A variation of SIP called SIMPLE is currently being designed to enhance the features of instant messaging programs. Plans have also been made to combine VOIP with the XMPP. Many well known companies such as Vonage were the first to use SIP systems, and other large companies such as AT&T are now beginning to look into SIP as well. The open source community is also adopting the use of SIP technology.
